People never mention how horrendously painful the process of writing is. There are plenty of suggestions for improving skills, developing habits, and dealing with writer's block, but none of this addresses the fundamental struggle with writing anything. Our brains are wired for speech, our thoughts rely primarily on the words of our mother tongue, but to write those same thoughts out puts our language in the grasp of our fingers. The temptation to believe that this kinesthetic sense of our own hands also extends to manipulating the meanings of our words is a strong and ultimately misguided illusion provided by writing, and so the real struggle lies in forcibly transmuting natural meaning to the symbols of an alphabet.
